TOUR DESCRIPTION

We’ll begin our journey by heading east of Medellín, climbing into the cool green mountains toward Santa Elena, a peaceful countryside town known for its flowers, traditional farms, fresh mountain air, and one of the most beautiful cultural traditions in Colombia: the Silleteros.

Santa Elena is not just another pretty village outside Medellín — it is the birthplace and living heart of the Silletero culture, the tradition that gave life to Medellín’s world-famous Flower Festival. Long before the festival became one of Colombia’s most iconic celebrations, local farmers from these mountains used wooden carrying frames called silletas to transport flowers, fruits, vegetables, and even people along the steep mountain paths that connected Santa Elena with Medellín. Over time, what began as a practical way of working the land became a powerful symbol of pride, resilience, creativity, and Paisa identity.

For the people of Medellín and Antioquia, the silletero represents much more than a flower farmer. The silletero is a symbol of the Paisa spirit: hardworking, humble, strong, creative, family-oriented, and deeply connected to the land. Every year during the Flower Festival, silleteros carry enormous, handcrafted flower arrangements on their backs through the streets of Medellín, turning the city into a colorful celebration of history, tradition, and beauty. Each silleta tells a story — some represent family heritage, others honor nature, local culture, peace, love, or the history of Colombia itself.

On this experience, we’ll visit a local flower farm run by a traditional farming family, where this heritage has been preserved through generations. You’ll have the opportunity to walk through colorful gardens, learn about the different varieties of flowers grown in the region, and understand why Colombia is one of the most important flower-producing countries in the world. Surrounded by the scent of fresh flowers and the peaceful landscape of the Andes, you’ll discover how these families cultivate, care for, and prepare the flowers that have made Santa Elena famous.

During the visit, the farmers will share their personal stories, explaining how the silletero tradition has shaped their lives, their families, and their community. You’ll learn how a silleta is designed and assembled, what each style represents, and why carrying one is considered an act of honor and cultural pride. Depending on the farm experience, you may even see a demonstration of how the flowers are arranged, take photos with a traditional silleta, and feel what it is like to be part of one of Medellín’s most beloved traditions.

This tour is a beautiful way to escape the city for a few hours and connect with the rural soul of Medellín — a world of mountain landscapes, family traditions, vibrant flowers, and stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. It is not only a visit to a flower farm; it is a journey into the heart of Paisa culture and one of the most meaningful traditions in Colombia.

End of tour.
